About This Blog

Why have a blog?
The social structure in a campground tends to be a loosely woven social fabric with little organization beyond that offered by the proprietors and little or no history. Because Jekyll offers future reservations for monthly guests, a significant number have formed a more solid community over the years, including group activities for fun and education. This blog provides one source of information about the community and its activities.
Why is it called "Falling Acorns"?
Some people guessed that it somehow referred to the nuts who come here in the winter, and the fact that they're not too stable on their feet. An excellent guess, but not the real story.
If you camp on Jekyll in November and December, the live oaks are releasing their fruit from 30-40 feet in the air. As they fall onto the top of your trailer or motor home, they make a distinctive Clang - rattle - rattle - rattle as they hit the roof then roll and fall off the sides. Unnerving at first, it becomes the rhythm of the campground, and you can tell when the wind blows without looking out the window. By January, most of the acorns have fallen, and the noise is far less frequent.
Who writes the blog?
As of this writing, Maureen Humphries and Mahlon Stacy have done most of the blog posts. All of the activities team has access to post on the blog.
