End of the Season

OK, we got through a whole winter without posting anything to the blog. There's a couple reasons for that:
1. Little demand. There's been few complaints about no blog content.
2. No cooperation. One of the reasons to do the blog was to reveal our activities to folks outside the current winter guest community. In part, this required that our pages be linked to by other sites, most preferably JIA's campground page. They put a link up there for a few weeks, but it was removed.

We invite anybody who is interested in the blog to visit the jekyllwinter facebook  (http://www.facebook.com/groups/jekyllwinter/) page. If people send me photos of our activities, I will post them there. Or you can become a page member and post your own. Just ask.

This does not mean that the activities nor the activities team is not going full speed ahead. We have had the busiest winter ever in my experience, so much so that people had to decide which thing to do at times. The "regular" events have been fully engaged: ladies lunches, book clubs, info meetings, men's coffees, sewing/knitting sessions, golf outings, and pot luck suppers full to overflowing. We've had a number of interesting speakers. With the acquisition of A/V equipment, there have been slide shows, singing bluegrass pickers, song lyrics, and movies. Several classes have been offered. Tours near and far. And a spectacular parade of dogs from all walks of life. Who had time to write a blog?

Of course, Ronnie's efforts to fill the campground have created some good problems. All of the folks involved in activities have been scratching their heads to figure out how to arrange the now woefully undersized tent to accommodate even more people. And faster food serving, while keeping the food warm. But that's OK. some folks like a challenge, and we've got one. We got a good start at the last pot luck. We'll figure it out, though we may have to go to two level seating ;-)

And it seems that the friendliness and stability of activities support is projecting well  into the future. We already have  events scheduled starting in November. And the Pancake Breakfasts are already in place. Just click on the calendar link above and go look.

So if anybody is catching this blog as a "drive-by" and is looking for a place to spend the winter in an RV, best call 912-635-3021 or 866-658-3021 right away and reserve yourself a spot. When you get here, we'll tell you haw to get in on pot luck suppers in February, it ain't easy!

Jekyll "Parking" fee changes

With the opening of the new toll booth, Jekyll has revised their rates for "parking" on the island. You can find the official notice here on the bottom of the page. The daily rate has increased 20% to $6.00. They have added an "oversize vehicle" rate which increases the cost to $10.00 per day, or a 100% increase. Annual decals are still $45 for cars and pickups.  An annual "oversize" rate is also available for $90, but I don't see winter guests paying this fee, since we don't leave and return often with our RVs.

Although the rates were set in July, there still seems to be some uncertainty about how they will be applied. As it says on the web page, the fees are charged "per entrance". However, be prepared to pay $10 for your "oversize" RV when you arrive in addition to your toad or tow vehicle charges. You will have to pay the $10 fee again if you take your RV off the island and return.

Change is inevitable.

Heart Rescue Video

Bob and Nancy Hoffman passed this link to me, I think it's worth sharing in the Jekyll Community. When I watched it, it gave me a better sens of what to expect if you encounter someone having a heart attack.

The new toll booth

Here's a shot of the new entrance booth to the island, provided by Ronnie. Looks pretty nice.
I'm a bit puzzled about the tall section above the toll collector's booth... I wonder if they'll be charging a toll for airplanes, too?

Happy Birthday to beloved campground host Mr. Corbett who turned 80 this week.
